The Inside Story

TSC Blog

In "Measuring the Value of a Degree and the Purpose of College," education writer Jeff Selingo brings up some of the new ways to approach post-secondary education. While there are advantages in alternative programs for many students, the Huffington Post scribe stresses the importance of college for a person’s intellectual and social maturation. He also makes clear the importance of a four-year degree in the workplace and its role in marking the possessor as an achiever who is ready to become a contributing member of society.

The Student Connection Blog is filled with news and information about learning and becoming capable learners. It also is a great place for sharing ideas, feedback and opinion. Please, tell us what you think.

Drop-In ACT Workshop

TSC Drop-In ACT Workshop

When it comes to getting into a top college or university, three letters can spell all the difference in the world to students: A-C-T.

To help learners maximize their individual ACT national college entrance examination scores, The Student Connection has developed a new Drop-In Workshop. Stop by the Center between 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and get started getting ready. No appointments are necessary.

The Drop-In ACT Workshop gives students a heads-up on the four ACT test areas: English, reading, mathematics, science and the optional essay writing component. Covering the four sections or specific areas of those in attendance, the workshop also provides examples from previous tests and practice examinations.

The ACT Essay Writing workshop covers how to plan, design and compose an essay specifically for the ACT exam. Students will learn what the ACT exam looks for and how to create a strong essay in a timed setting.

Expressed as a number from a top score of 36 to 0, the ACT national college entrance examination measures applicants’ proficiencies in English, science, reading, math and writing. Colleges also use ACT test scores to project how students will perform academically in their schools. The number helps determine who gets in and who doesn’t.

Students can re-take the examination as many as 12 times. The results of only one test, however, are submitted as part of a college application. About 55-percent of students who re-take the test improve their initial score.

Results of the ACT national college entrance examination are accepted by all 4-year colleges and universities in the United States. The ACT test is administered six times per year. Upcoming ACT test date is April 13. Registrations must be completed by March 8.

“From ‘what they know’ to ‘how they learn,’ no two students are the same,” Brigid Godvin, Academic Director of The Student Connection, said. “In addition to measuring what each student understands, our approach is to identify how each student learns best and help them develop the skills they’ll need when they take the ACT exam. Then, we create the specific plan of action for each individual learner, helping them develop and strengthen those skills they’ll need for getting the best score they can achieve.”

The educational evaluation process gathers solid information about a student's learning and functional abilities in order to best determine the individual's educational needs. Information is gathered through interviews with students and parents, through individual and group tests, and from other sources.

The evaluation helps identify children who are eligible for special education and related services. Evaluations also are used to create an Individualized Education Program and form a baseline from which to measure a learner's progress. Most importantly, the information helps create the optimal educational program for the student.

Please let us know if you have any questions or how we can be of service. Thank you for your kind attention.
